[Help-gsl] help for linking test program

Hello

I downloaded & installed gsl 1.8 on my suse10.
to /home/prammos/Documents/gsl-1.8/

Nothing was installed at 'default' directories
/usr/local/lib
/usr/local/include
(they are empty)

This command worked fine:
gcc -Wall -I/home/prammos/Documents/gsl-1.8/ -c  test1.c
producing the test1.o file

However, this:
gcc -L/home/prammos/Documents/gsl-1.8 test1.o -lgsl -lgslcblas -lm
gives:
/usr/lib/gcc/i586-suse-linux/4.0.2/../../../../i586-suse-linux/bin/ld:
cannot find -lgsl
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

Furthermore,no file under the name libgslcblas or libgsl
are installed anywhere.
It seems both -lgsl and -lgslcblas are invisible to gcc

what am i doing wrong?
