I am trying to build gsl from the git repo.

I have

bash-3.2$ autoconf --version
autoconf (GNU Autoconf) 2.69

bash-3.2$ automake --version
automake (GNU automake) 1.15.1

bash-3.2$ libtool --version
libtool (GNU libtool) 2.4.6

If I try running autoconf, I get errors

bash-3.2$ autoconf error: possibly undefined macro: AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE
If this token and others are legitimate, please use m4_pattern_allow.
See the Autoconf documentation. error: possibly undefined macro: AM_MAINTAINER_MODE

Searching the web suggests trying autoreconf -i -v but this gives lots of
errors about libtool.

bash-3.2$ autoreconf -i -v
autoreconf: Entering directory `.'
autoreconf: not using Gettext
autoreconf: running: aclocal
autoreconf: tracing
autoreconf: not using Libtool
autoreconf: running:
autoreconf: running:
autoreconf: running: automake --add-missing --copy --no-force installing './compile' installing './config.guess' installing './config.sub' error: Libtool library used but 'LIBTOOL' is undefined The usual way to define 'LIBTOOL' is to add 'LT_INIT' to '' and run 'aclocal' and 'autoconf' again. If 'LT_INIT' is in '', make sure its definition is in aclocal's search path. installing './depcomp'

I do seem to get a configure file but running it results in errors
