"Translator died"

'I have tried out the translator-mechanismus from the example given in
www.debian.org/ports/hurd/hurd-doc-translator,
but I get the message: Translator died. Here is the set-up:

    dd if=dev/zero of=dummy.fs bs=1024k count=8
    mke2fs dummy.fs
settrans -c dummy /hurd/ext2fs 'pwd' /dummy.fs [or I just skip the 'pwd']
    ls dummy

Now this message comes up: "Translator died."

I have tried this in single user modus and in regular login user modus where I
erase -s from the kernel entrance in Grub.

The result is the same. The message after "mke2fs dummy.fs" is: "dummy.fs is
no regular device continue yes or no;" I choose yes.

As I wrote, this is an example proposed by the debian-page in order to start
getting the feeling for the translator mechanism of the servers.
Is there any bright brains around with a lightening-answer to this?
