1. Check whether Mach knows about your ethernet device:
devprobe eth0
If that does not yield a 'eth0' message instead of no output, your
ethernet device is probably not supported. Also check the boot
messages.
2. If you have the 'libnss-db' package installed, remove it via
dpkg -r libnss-db
