You may want to try the cdrom, just insert the Debian GNU/Hurd CD 1 into your
cdrom and do:
# apt-cdrom add
# settrans -ac /cdrom /hurd/isofs(or iso9660fs depending on how old your hurd
is) /dev/CDROM_DEVICE
# apt-get update
# apt-get install nano
That should get Nano installed.
