I had set the filesystem to ext2 is that what you mean?
I will try to use Qemu and then post the results again.

Maybe try Qemu instead -- more people here have experience with it. And
it's free!

Hm... Did you set the OS for the filesystem to Hurd? Can't think of
anything else right now...
