Thank you Paul for the nice explanation. I wonder if we could correct
the manual a bit, the following sentence of 5.7.2:
"...but do not override what is specified in the makefile used by the
sub-make makefile unless you use the...."
Then it can be replaced with:
"...but do not override what is specified in the makefile used by the
sub-make unless you use the...."
