Unfortunately that leaves additional spaces in TeX outputs. There are
none in HTML nor text. I don't know for XML.
Can these spaces be killed?
Possibly, I can look.
allow leaving some captions for @example, and getting a table of these
captions, plus an easy means to xref them.
Sorry, I'm still baffled as to what you really want. That's exactly how
we designed @float in the first place. @float Example, refname, ...
And I know you know that. What is the @macro supposed to be accomplishing?
This seems a separate issue from having a float across multiple pages?
I was wondering whether there would be a means to have counters
independent of floats.
That is potentially doable (another user asked for it, too), although I
don't quite see how it's going to help, either.
I'm totally confused.
