Hi Keith.  I thought I'd reply to your question on the list since it's
come up in the past too.  Here's what you wrote me:

    documentation (patching, installing software, etc.) and am interested
    in using texinfo my standard markup language.

    Is there such a collection?  Ideally, there is a place to download
    samples that showcase the layouts that are possible with texinfo.

There is no such collection of documents (that I know of).  As I
mentioned, one of the goals of Texinfo was *not* to have a plethora of
design and layout options, essentially to force the manual writers to
spend their time writing instead of tweaking the layout.  For example,
it's not even possible to change the default fonts.  (I'd actually like
to change that, but it turns out to be a very difficult problem.)

The few layout options that exist in Texinfo are described in the
manual.  You might also check out the reference card, where they're
clumped together near the end.  I don't think you will find it hard to
envision what the options do.  The PDF of the manual does show examples
of some of them in action.

So, if you need a program that allows you to create more or less
arbitrary layouts, the base Texinfo is not it.

On the other hand, it is theoretically possible to convert Texinfo to
LaTeX.  Then it is completely plausible to change the layout into
anything you want.  Right now Torsten Bronger's texi2latex project (hi,
Torsten) (https://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/texi2latex/) is the only
working implementation, and it was a bit stale last I looked.  But the
basic idea is there.

There's also the XML backend in makeinfo (--xml) if you like XML-based
stuff.  (I don't, personally.)

We hope to have a latex backend in the core distribution in the not
impossibly distant future.  (But first we must get the new release out
the door, and that is still a ways away despite all of Patrice's efforts.)
