       important, doubt is how to make sure that functions in the ‘cp’
       index (say) are formatted with address@hidden as opposed to 
address@hidden

   The cp index is formatted with the @r font.  All other predefined
   indexes are formatted with the @code font.

Right.

       That information doesn't seem to be captured anywhere.

   Indexes using @r vs. @tt is part of the definition of Texinfo, just
   like anything else, so it's not something that would be part of an
   xml-or-whatever file as far as I can see.

Yes, that's the issue.  How to carry into the .ixin format enough
information, given (for example):

 @syncodeindex fn cp
 ...
 @defun foo
 @end defun
 ...
 @cindex bar

such that rendering programs DTRT for both ‘foo’ and ‘bar’.  Currently,
some inline formatting is saved (such as ‘code’ -- see alive.ixin:54),
but that's just part of what's needed.
