It's highly unlikely -- reasonably recent versions of CVS interoperate
on a single repository quite nicely.  Of course, you can't use new
features like LockDir unless all the versions support them, but as long
as you stick to the common subset everything works fine.  I'm sharing a
repository with versions between 1.9.something and 1.11 without any
problems at all.  Your problem was almost certainly NFS bugs, too.
