If you did not commit the previous change, the add should not have been
allowed.

What do you mean by "does not work"?  Do you get error messages?  Does
it crash?  More details are required to diagnose the problem.  As long
as you commit the remove before doing the add, it should work fine.  And
if you don't commit the remove before doing the add, the add should fail.
