What I had in mind, was something more like:

checkout knows the list of what directories it's going to operate over first, 
so start with
the first one, and don't create the tree under it, just do the one directory.  
If there are
sub-directories, recurse, doing that one directory but remembering where in the 
tree it
is.  etc, etc.

Sounds like it's not easy to do...
