CVS for extranet ?

Hi, my friend and I are doing a project, we have separate home machines both connecting to the internet but we don't have a LAN, is that OK if one sets up a CVS server and both install the client? or is that a must we have a LAN?

 

If the CVS is not working for this purpose, any suggestion for any other "extranet" version control system, free and paid?
