Most systems don't allow numeric port numbers in inetd.conf -- you
probably need to add a "cvspserver" entry to your /etc/services file and
use "cvspserver" instead of "2401" in inetd.conf.

The error messages imply that you tried a number of different
configurations which makes it somewhat difficult to discern which error
messages pertain to the above configuration and which do not. In
general, however, it looks like the inetd.conf entry is not all on one
line like it needs to be -- perhaps your editor is automatically
inserting line breaks for you.

I would also suggest upgrading to the current release of CVS (1.11.1p1,
or at least 1.11), which you can get from www.cvshome.org.
