You're right -- I overlooked the fact that the files were coming from
different subdirectories.  CVS requires that all the files in a working
directory come from the same repository directory.  So, you can use -d
to rearrange things however you want, but you have to heed that
restriction.  Which means that you can't do exactly what you want, but
perhaps you can so something similar.
