CVS can tunnel it's traffic over SSH, which provides you with encryption,
and you are free to use whatever method of authentication your SSH client
and server supports.

For additional credit you can use filesystem permissions to limit where each
developer can commit files.

I prefer the dark of the night, after midnight and before four-thirty,
when it's more bare, more hollow.
