Interesting.  As part of my investigation of what caused the protocol errors,
I amended our CVS server to dump out this uncounted data (on protocol_inbuf)
to a debug file to see exactly what it was that it wasn't expected.  The very
first thing in the debug file was the content of the log message template,
followed by the parts of the component being checked out that never ended up
on the client.

I have placed a copy of the file - it's binary, so not suitable for
e-mail/news - on our support website if anybody feels inclined to look at it.
