Here I get a connection:
Connected to
Escape character is '^]'.

Connection closed by foreign host.

There is a pause of a couple seconds in between.
Same result whether I press `return' or not

Good section there thanks.. Sorry I missed that heading in the manual.
When `man cvs|grep debug' Didn't get any hits, I thought there was no
section about debugging. Didn't think to look at `info cvs'

After reading thru that and trying the telnet stuff, I suspect
something in /etc/inetd.conf is hosed on the server but, I do know that
quite a few people are connecting and checking out a copy of
gnus. What I don't know is exactly how they are connecting. On user
told me he just goes to his working copy gnus and says `cvs update'.

That is what I used to do too. They moved the server and at
least one other user plus myself cannot connect now.

I'm hoping to get someone to take a look but haven't found out who to
ask yet. I will though... sooner or later.
