"end of file from server"

I set up a chrooted tunneled CVS server on linux with the document at 
http://www.idealx.org/en/doc/chrooted-ssh-cvs-server/chrooted-ssh-cvs-server.html,
 
and every time I try to do something (update in this case) I get this 
message: "cvs [update aborted]: end of file from server (consult above 
messages if any)". What am I doing wrong?
