Except when something gets screwed up. So the advice is "never screw
anything up"?

I had some kind of odd interaction with CVS that would put newly added
files into the wrong branch for awhile. Alas, *my* tree compiled, 
because CVS kept track of everything.

Slicking the tree, upgrading all machines to 1.11p1, and a fresh checkout
made those checkin problems go away -- I hope -- but it took quite some
time to find.
