CVS won't login to some servers, fails with strange error

When attempting to log into some servers (gnome cvs and sourceforge so
far) I get this message.  

cvs [login aborted]: internal error: get_cvs_port_number called for
invalid connection method (ext): Invalid argument

I have cvs 1.11.1p1, and have also tried this with the cvs version of
cvs (I seem to be able to login there fine) with the same results.  I
have had people with the same version try the same servers at the same
time, so I don't think it is a server side problem.

How do I fix this?
