A dead state means that file has been removed .. for that revision.

This sounds like my situation, but I was hoping someone could confirm this.

Confirmed.

You can recover the files on the trunk by doing a cvs update -A (to put you back on the trunk), followed by a cvs add for each of the files, followed by cvs commit.

Now try the cvs update -rBRANCH
