invalid arguement

Does anyone know why I get the following messege all of the sudden when
trying to perform an action (i.e. update, graph, log, commit) on a single
file?  I don't get it when performing actions on entire directories.

cvs log makefile (in directory C:\ngap\custom\)
cvs [server aborted]: no such directory `.'
cvs [log aborted]: reading from server: Invalid argument

*****CVS exited normally with code 1*****
