What you say is "obvious" is not nearly so.
The GIF does need to be part of the build, and it is something that
might change over time, but it doesn't necessarily have to be kept quite
so closely in sync with the sources (an old GIF may work fine with a new
product, just as a new GIF may work fine with an old product), and it is
not source itself either.
You've got to learn to think (and climb) outside of the box you've put
yourself into. You cannot successfully use CVS for everything, and if
you learn to understand it properly you'll realise you don't want to
either!
Use the right tool for the job. If there is no "right" tool available
then create one -- it's only software after all.
