I've always used Cygwin in binary mode with editors
that understand one-character line endings.  I had
thought, in order to use "closed-world" editors, one
would have to mount using text mode.  Do to the lack
of real experience with this on my part, I would trust
your (ie David's) assessment and advice over mine.
