You need to figure out *why* it's slow: is the network slow, are you
paging or swapping because you don't have enough free memory, is the CPU
overcommitted, or what?  That's something your Unix system administrator
should be able to determine.  If not, you'll need to ask people who are
familiar with your particular flavor of Unix what tools are available
and how to interpret their output.  Once you know what the problem is,
the solution should be obvious.
