What version(s) of CVS?  If you're not running at least 1.11.3, you
might want to try upgrading -- the locking scheme for tag was changed in
1.11.3 to only lock one directory at a time rather than locking and
unlocking the entire tree, so it should be significantly faster.  You
also might want to try setting LockDir in CVSROOT/config to point to a
directory on an in-memory filesystem or RAM disk if you have one.
