I almost neglected to mention one more thing--the CVS book also suggests that, after you check a project in for the first time with cvs import, you should (backup and) delete the copy you just checked in, then check it back out. That way, the copy of the project you end up with is the CVS sandbox and not the original. That's because if you don't do it this way, you may end up editing the original instead of the sandbox, and, after changing parts of the original, might be utterly confused or irritated come commit time...
