If you just don't want to include sub1 with your checking outm In your
"CVSROOT/module" file, you can add:
nosub1 -a !path/to/dev1/sub1 path
which will not include "path/to/dev1/sub1" directory when you check
out by "cvs co nosub1"
see also manual page 137.
