if by similar box you mean, same family of processors (iX86) and the same
kernel family and library family, THEN maybe you can do what you want.

I know that I have been able to run the same SUN binary on several versions
of Solaris.
I know that I have been able to run the same Linux binary on several
versions of the Linux kernel (2.0 - 2.4).

But unless there is a reason to stick with the old CVS binary, such as some
people have had problems with eclipse and newer (1.12.x) IIRC,
building/using a newer stable version is usually a good idea.

Which kernels and processor? Is it really difficult to get CVS to build for
the new system?

In other words, it might and it might not, no one I know will make a
guaranty for a binary to work on systems they have not rigorously tested.
