If the repository really is such a mess, then you may be further ahead
starting over with a completely clean slate: create a new section of the
repository, and import/add only the HEAD of the current repository.
Whether or not you import/add any existing branches will depend on
whether there's any development currently on those branches, and how
close to completion that development is.

Leave the existing repository as-is, and make it read-only, for
historical reference.

Host availability I can understand, but software support policy?!? We're
not talking about a mega-buck support contract here, but a free
software. There have been a LOT of bug fixes and security holes patched
since those revisions were released. Try to get your management to see
the value of loosening up their support policy somewhat.
