I just checked and in FC4, I believe the auto-partition created LVM as:

Filesystem           1M-blocks      Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00
                         71822      2868     65247   5% /
/dev/hda1                   99        10        84  11% /boot
/dev/shm                   505         0       505   0% /dev/shm

could it be failing because of the Volume group partition?
