Yes, it looks like a Solaris + NFS issue, when I tried to compile a more
recent version of cvs in $HOME, `make check` also gave me a bunch of
"make: getcwd: : Permission denied" errors, and ended with 

./ cannot determine current directory
./ /check.log: cannot create
./ /check.log: cannot create
make[2]: *** [localcheck] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `'
make[1]: *** [check-am] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `'
make: *** [check-recursive] Error 1
