Hi Tood.

Answers below...

A) what OS and version are you running this under?
[ with a Unix issue `uname -a` and paste the result in your email]

------------------------------------------------------
We have a variety of OS.

Redhat WS3.0, 7.1, 7.3, 8.0
CentOS 3.8, 4.2, 4.4, 4.
Solaris 5.8 and 5.9

Uname from solaris:
SunOS sulfur 5.9 Generic_112233-02 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-280R
SunOS sunfarm121 5.8 Generic_108528-13 sun4u sparc SUNW,UltraAX-i2

We've seen it happen on both Solaris and Linux, but I don't have stats
on which specific OS. Nothing has been logged on that.
---------------------------------------------------------

B) which version of cvs, i.e., issue `cvs --version` and paste the
result in
your email?

------------------------------------------------------
Concurrent Versions System (CVS) 1.11 (client/server)
------------------------------------------------------

C) connection method [:ext:(with ssh/rsh),:pserver:...]?
-------------------------------
:pserver method.
-------------------------------

D) OS and version of the server machine?
----------------------------------------------------
Linux cvs 2.6.9-42.0.2.ELsmp #1 SMP Wed Aug 23 00:17:26 CDT 2006 i686
i686 i386 GNU/Linux
----------------------------------------------------

E) cvs version on the server machine?
----------------------------------------------------
Concurrent Versions System (CVS) 1.11.17 (client/server)
----------------------------------------------------

F) does the sandbox exist on a local physical drive [(S)ATA, SCSI, USB,
Firewire...], or on the network [NFS, AFS, SMB...]?
---------------------------------------------------------
I think in most cases it is mount point on the box.
---------------------------------------------------------

G) what if any front ends are you using [eclipse, TortoiseCVS,
WinCVS...] when
you see the fault?
---------------------------------------------------------
None. We run directly on the command line.
--------------------------------------------------------

H) do you see any errors when you run the command in a terminal?
i.e., can you capture a few runs like
`cvs co module > cologfile[123].txt 2>&1`
`cvs update > uplogfile[123].txt 2>&1`
and check for the Entries.Static to show up after each, look in the log
file
when you find the Entries.Static just after a run.

----------------------------------------------------------
I've never seen this case happen myself. I've only been
Here 2 weeks. This problem has been happening for months though
And no one I've spoken to has ever noticed any messaging. Often
This zero file checkout is unnoticed and causes some rather large
Problems which are hard to debug. We waste a lot of time.
----------------------------------------------------------

I) does (with the _permission_ of your network admin)
`ping -s 1400 -f -c 200 servermachine`
show any packet loss?
---------------------------------------------------------
Ran this command several times as root, no packet loss.
