User-agent: Gnus/5.110007 (No Gnus v0.7) XEmacs/21.4.17 (usg-unix-v, no MULE)

Although I replied privately to Arthur I'd like to post the resolution
to the general list.

It turns out that this error is triggered when the server is in a
low-memory situation. Something was screwed up on our box and we have
almost run out of swap space. As soon as we resolved that this problem
went away.

Thanks.
