CVS testing

Hi,

I am looking into testing what happens if CVS is down and tests are trying to 
run on a machine CVS is on. How can I simulate CVS going down and then running 
a test on the specific machine to see what happens? In our team it has been set 
that an email is sent out to say CVS has crashed but I am not sure how to test 
this to see if the email is sent. Anyone any ideas??
