GNU Source Installer 2.0 first offical release is
available:

ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/sourceinstall

GNU Source Installer 2.0 is a complete rewrite of the
previous sourceinstall. It is a complete source code
installations manager for Unix-like systems, useful
for both the beginner and the advanced user.
While the beginner can appreciate the fancy GTK gui to
handle configuration, compilation, and installation of
source packages (without hiding the low level details
for an interested user), the advanced user can benefit
from a complete and scriptable command line front-end,
and more functionality than he would have by using
./configure && make && make install directly:

- tracking of installed packages and the associated
files amd installation consistency checks.
- extended information about source packages
- easy and clean handling of package upgrades
- enhanced uninstallation, when make uninstall is not
able to clean the installation completely
- package information export in plain text and XML
formats
- host-specific binary package generation from the
installation
- centralized settings for prefix and other build
preferences

Personally I use this package manager _in addition_ to
the OS specific package management tools on my
systems, using different prefixes for system-level
installations, while user-installations are all
handled by sourceinstall.

Using customized installation prefixes might require
OS specific adjustements to enable library
installations (extending LD_LIBRARY_PATH env variable,
or using ld.so.conf).

It has been reported that on some proprietary UNIX
system it might be necessary to have /usr/ccs/bin in
the PATH to build the sourceinstall library.

Development happens on savannah:
http://savannah.gnu.org/projects/sourceinstall

The project is looking for help:

Please report public comments, critics, bug reports,
and any other feedback to address@hidden

Happy installing,

Claudio
