Release of GNUspool

From: John M Collins
Subject: Release of GNUspool
Date: Fri, 22 Aug 2008 16:11:41 +0100

GNUspool has just been added to GNU although it is a mature product with a 24-year history.

It is in principle a print-spooler but it provides tons of extra facilities for speaking to any kind of printer via any kind of interface. It gives control over formtypes including automatically downloading stuff to select input or output trays and such or to transparently translate data, perhaps using Ghostscript etc.

Run on several hosts, it provides a means of sharing printers and jobs, viewing, and un-queuing jobs. Interactive queue managers for various interfaces allow the user to start and stop printers, change job parameters and so forth.

Extensive security features are provided to control access to the system.

On top of all that it is very fast and reliable. And it has all the benefits of being a GNU product.

The product is maintained by John Collins from near London, England, who wrote every line of the original product back in 1984 and has maintained and improved it ever since but looks forward to it making ever greater strides under the GNU banner.
