Because Gnus caches information on the articles in the NOV files, and just
adding a file to an nnml directory won't update the cache, so Gnus will not
be aware of the new message.  Maildir on the other hand, has separate
subdirectories for delivery and storage, and when a message is read, it is
moved from the former into the latter.
