Roughly speaking it means that Gnus was able to get some information
about the article to put that line in the summary buffer, but wasn't
able to get the article itself.

It could be that the article was available when you first entered the
group, but then became unavailable before you had a chance to select
it. This might happen if the article was cancelled or superseded in
that time, or if the server becomes temporarily unavailable.

It might even happen if you've setup Gnus such that it infers the
existence of some articles from the references header of articles
posted later, but that these articles don't actually exist
anymore. I'm not sure about that one.
