Problems with mule-ucs and Gnus

Hello there,

I've been using Gnus for about 1 week now and until now I really
satisfied except for one thing: I cannot read UTF8 encoded messages. To
do so I installed mule-ucs and put the following in my
~/.xemacs/custom.el:

(require 'un-define)
(require 'unicode)

Everthing works fine. I can read the postings and the characters are
decoded fine. But when I want to reply to a posting Gnus asks me for the
newsgroup to reply to as the header is said to be empty. Also the
subject is quoted as "Re: (none)". The contents of the message I reply
to are quoted correctly anyway. When I deactivate un-define Gnus works
the normal way again except for the fact that of course no UTF8 posting
is decoded correctly. Is there any way to get these things to work? If
"yes": how?

XEmacs:   "21.4 (patch 3) \"Academic Rigor\" XEmacs Lucid" on Irix
Gnus:     "Gnus v5.10.6"
mule-ucs: 1.06
