I've noticed the same thing, but only for my primary NNTP server. My
secondary server, Gmane, does show new messages with a "g" key
press. To get my primary NNTP server to show new messages, I usually
have to select some group or topic and hit M-g.
It's become a matter of muscle memory at this point, but your message
made me recall that something is amiss.
