Trouble with the agent .. things painfully slow

Hi I use  Gnus v5.10.6 on XEmacs 21.4 (patch 15) 

I read mail using nnimap. A long time back I had tried playing with
the Gnus agent but then gave up. I still have the following line in my
.gnus file:

;;; Make Gnus into an offline newsreader.
;;(gnus-agentize)

I figured that commenting the line was enough to disable the agent. 

However, I've noticed that every time I delete a mail or move it into
another folder something like the agent kicks in .. I see a message
"gnus-agent-expire ... Kept unread article". Thus far it's only been
an annoyance. All of a sudden it's become an extreme problem. It takes
many minutes to delete a message or move it to another folder. I'm not
sure if this delay is because of:

    1. I now have many more messages
    2. I recently moved to XEmacs 21.4.15 from 21.4.14 .... 

How can I truly turn the agent off ? Thanks !
