how to defeat parallel groups (mail)

It seems when I create a group via
(setq nnmail-split-methods
...
I end up with two groups:

       4: nnml+private:emacs
 U  4020: nnml+private:other
       5: nnml+private:perl
       *: perl
       0: nnml:other
       0: nnml:emacs
       0: nnml:perl

I believe I used a 'U' in the *Group* buffer to
subscribe to the group.

Is this just a pilot error when I subscribed?
