Earthlink's New ASMTP Protocol

ASMTP = Authenticated SMTP

Is this supported by gnus? I tried just changing the SMTP server to utilize
the new ASMTP server and I get an "SMTP protocol error". 

(setq message-send-mail-function 'smtpmail-send-it smtpmail-default-smtp-server 
"smtp.earthlink.net")
