fetching articles in thread for mail

i can fetch articles for a thread in a newsgroup without any
problem (A T). however, when i try to do that with email, nothing is
returned. i can't even get the parent of an email.

after i read an email, it doesn't show up unless i fetch a whole bunch
of them (which is not a problem in newsgroups because i can A T things),
but how do i accomplish the same thing for email?
