New released gnus is slow on maildir

Hello all,

I am using maildir for my mail, which I get from gmail using getmail.
With gnus that comes with Emacs 23.2.1, the splitting of new mails and
starting gnus takes some time, like a minute or sometimes a little more,
after the "Checking new news..." message. And sometimes there were
errors when trying to pull, say, about 20 messages or so.

I was glad that using a version of pulled from git in January 31, gnus
starts splitting mail immediately, and starting it takes only a few
seconds. However with the just released version 0.13, it takes again
some time to split the mails. Is there some variable I can tweak so that
I can use the development version again?
