Running a Jami binary without having to install as root

Hi all:

I am allergic to installing software as root. For example, I have gone to great 
lengths to try and sandbox Skype:

I know it is not really secure, so I am not using Skype under Linux anymore.

I think that, if you build from sources, you can run Jami from the build sandbox as a regular, unprivileged user. So I could create a second user 
account just in order to build Jami and run it there. But it is quite a lot of work for each computer.

Is there a way to download some 'portable' version of Jami for Linux? Or can you unpack the .deb package and run it on a separate user account without 
having to install it as root beforehand?

If not, then I would suggest distributing Jami as an AppImage:

"AppImages can be downloaded and run without installation or the need for root 
rights."
