just one more clarification to aid in fixing this bug the right way.

items.onloan should default to a null value, if the item is checked out it
should be set to the due date, if it's returned, it should be set back to null.
Both a checkout and a checkin should trigger a zebraqueue to make sure that
zebra indexes or doesn't index the corresponding MARC subfield.
